Belly Dance is a cultural art form that is making its way into mainstream exercise.  Women of all ages, body types and ethnicities are discovering this fun and exotic, yet traditional exercise.  This art form builds muscle control, flexibility, coordination and self-esteem.  It’s great exercise for the whole body and a perfect way to reduce stress.

Rahana dancingBelly dancing comes from North Africa, Asia and the Middle East.  Because this dance form is a fusion of so many different styles it undoubtedly has a variety of origins, many of which stem from ethnic folk dancing.   Today, it is commonly referred to as Raqs Sharki or Danse Orientale.

MURAL PROJECT--Be the Change!

“Be the change you want to see in the world,”
-- Mahatma Gandhi

In the lobby, write down your personal commitment to create peace within yourself on a piece of paper and add it to our
PEACE MURAL.  Your intent will become part of a beautiful peace sign painted by the visionary artist, Star Shields.

Take personal action to help co-create a healthy, sustainable and peaceful New World.  It absolutely comes down to the individual.   No one person or even a whole nation can “make” peace happen.   We can only “live in peace” from the inside, out.

☺  Welcome to the New World you are helping create!

ASHTI DRUM—peace building in IRAQ

5:00 pm Saturday & Sunday in the Theater

Ashti DrumAs troops withdraw from Iraq, music is moving in!

Watch how the power of music can unite people from different cultures, languages, and even religions through the simple use of a handmade drum.  This 5 minute short film features a program called ASHTI Drum which means “Peace Drum” in Kurdish.

In 2007, author and music therapist Christine Stevens took a team to Iraq to train Iraqis in the art of drum circle leadership.  These 38 facilitators have begun drum circles all over this war-torn area, helping to create a lasting model for peace. Drumming together as a group is a powerful way to develop conflict resolution, youth empowerment, therapeutic healing and peace building.

"Music rebuilds the human soul. This is the greatest testimony to the healing power of music I've ever seen. We are establishing a model for global diplomacy through music." Christine Stevens

Christine Stevens will give a short talk at the beginning of this film.  Come and meet the person behind this amazing program.
